The Jackal’s Clever Plan
Moral of the Story: Be smart and use your wits to solve problems.
Once upon a time, there was a clever jackal named Mahachaturaka who lived in a big jungle.
One day, Mahachaturaka was very hungry and looking for food. He found a big, dead elephant. He was so happy because he knew this elephant would give him food for many days. But there was a problem. The elephant’s skin was too thick for him to tear open.
Mahachaturaka tried and tried, but he couldn’t get through the skin. He walked around the elephant, thinking hard about what to do.
Just then, he saw a lion coming. Mahachaturaka quickly bowed and said, “Oh King of the Jungle, I found this dead elephant and saved it for you. Please eat as much as you want.”
The lion looked at the elephant and said, “I only eat animals that I hunt myself. Thank you, but you can have it.” Then the lion walked away.
Mahachaturaka was still stuck. He needed to find a way to tear the elephant’s skin. Soon, he saw a leopard coming. Mahachaturaka thought, “I need to be smart to get rid of the leopard.”
He climbed on top of the elephant and puffed out his chest. He said, “Oh Uncle Leopard, you are in danger! This elephant was killed by the lion, and he asked me to guard it.”
The leopard saw the lion’s tracks and got scared. He said, “Oh Nephew, please don’t tell the lion I was here. I will leave right away.” The leopard ran away quickly.
Mahachaturaka was still hungry and needed to tear the elephant’s skin. Then he saw a tiger coming. He thought, “The tiger is strong and has sharp teeth. Maybe he can help me.”
Mahachaturaka called out, “Hey Tiger, you look so thin and hungry. Come and eat this elephant. The lion killed it and asked me to watch over it. Don’t worry, I’ll keep a lookout.”
The tiger was happy and started tearing the elephant’s skin with his sharp teeth. Just as the tiger began to eat, Mahachaturaka shouted, “Quick, the lion is coming! Run away!”
The tiger got scared and ran away fast.
Finally, Mahachaturaka had what he needed. The tiger had opened the elephant’s skin.
At last, Mahachaturaka could eat the elephant and was very happy.
